Vicki Liszewski modestly expresses surprise that she was chosen to be the Featured Artist at the upcoming Spring show of the Nature Artists' Guild at Morton Arboretum, Lisle, IL this coming weekend, April 4, 5, & 6, 2025.
One look at her beautiful work and it’s no surprise to anyone that she was a natural choice for such a distinction. As the show’s Featured Artist, she was assigned a separate area that showcases 30 of her pieces. Part of the responsibilities for this honor, entails her to be on hand each day to greet visitors and answer questions.
Her preferred mediums now are pastels and watercolor. She studied art in high school and later majored in art at the University of Wisconsin—Whitewater. After teaching art for a while, she morphed into graphic and web design for various firms. Upon retiring, she decided to return to fine art once more and learned about watercolor by taking classes at the DuPage Art League in Wheaton, IL, along with various well-known artists around the country, and at Dillman’s Resort in Wisconsin.
She credits growing up on lakes in Wisconsin for her exposure to “wild places” where she could play for hours on empty lots and in nearby forests. Traveling, camping, and continually enjoying the Great Outdoors across the U.S. and Canada nourished her appreciation for nature.
Interested in birds since grade school, she was always well aware of the ones around her as she played outside and became able to identify them by their distinctive calls.
“It’s easy to mark the season by which birds are around,” she notes. Recently while out driving she noticed Sandhill cranes flying high overhead migrating back north again and knew it was a harbinger that Spring was arriving.
Her nature-based art is created from photographs that she studies, including the ones from friends, where she proceeds to create something new.
“I like the process of painting and figuring out how to make the medium do what I want,” she explains. “Watercolor can make for some happy accidents and with pastels it’s all about making the marks mix and blend.”
Vicki describes herself as a lifelong learner and encourages us all to continue taking classes that help us stay committed to our art and grow through the connections they bring. ###
