Blue Moon Gallery, 18620 Belvidere Road, Grayslake IL proudly announces the winners from its recent 4th Annual Juried Exhibition & Competition opening March 25, 2023. This year's theme was "It's Not All Black & White" on view through April 16, 2023.
Gallery owner, Kendra Kett, describes the show as thought-provoking, dramatic, and exciting.
Over 80 pieces of art were submitted for consideration by the exhibition's juror, Mimi Peterson, BFA, multi-disciplinary artist, essayist, poet, and art advocate of Racine WI. Peterson is also the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Vital Art Project based in Racine.
Thirty-seven artists were selected to show a total of 41 pieces of original fine art addressing the colors black, white, and gray as well as their many social connotations and associations. Over 18 different mediums are presented in the exhibition.
Jeff Wozniak of Hainesville was awarded 1st Place for "Migraine" -- a 21x11x4 framed assemblage of black and white painted woodblocks juxtaposed from each other on a grid. Wozniak's focus for this piece was the disorientation that black-and-white shapes and patterns can cause. Although the linear pattern on the blocks matches the background, their varying size and rotation create an environment where anything outside your focal point feels unnatural.
Debra Zare of Lake Bluff was recognized with 2nd Place for her 36x18 acrylic painting "What Lies Beneath." The artist used black, white, and gray tones to entice the viewer to look more closely and to set a timeless mood. The painting explores why we are here & how our existence will be interpreted based on what is left behind.
Marcia Biasiello of Lincolnshire received 3rd Place for "White Chair Black Dress and a Plum" -- a 36x24 acrylic painting about an interracial relationship. In Biasiello's painting a black man sits upon a white chair while a white woman stands next to him wearing a black dress. In a room that envelops their connection, there is light, shadow, a pause, and the offer of a plum. The artist invites us to consider that what happens next is open with possibility, inevitable, and from choice, not restriction and constraint.
Honorable Mention was awarded to Allison Hausladen of Grayslake for "Black-eyed Susans in Snow" featuring thick applications of black and white paint applied via palette knife on a 14x11 wood cradle board. Said Hausladen: "The traditional way of gardening leaves the land clean and sterile during the winter, but the newer movement to “leave the leaves” aims at increasing biodiversity effortlessly. Like so many things, what we believe was the “right” way to do things is often the complete opposite of that. Nothing is black and white."
