"Intense Conversation" Pastel, 12"x13", $475 by Darlene Bock. Scroll down for more of her artwork...
On any given week, Darlene can be found in a life drawing session because, she notes, the eye is so far superior to a camera for capturing color variations among other important, subtle details. Shadows and angles all contribute to the composition of her work where she knows exactly how to direct the viewer's eye through skillful use of effective lighting.
"It is important to draw from life -- figures are very challenging," explains Darlene who has been avidly drawing since childhood and holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She finds inspiration everywhere -- especially the outdoors where nature treats her regularly to lighting and colorful reflections. In this case, she'll keep her camera ready to capture imagery she can use later in her studio when working on a still life or landscape.
Preferring archival, sanded paper, she notes that it grabs the dry pastels well that she likes to use, and needs less fixative. She says that the moment she tried pastel it was love at first touch. When painting, she expands upon what she sees, keeping her strokes visible. A rough surfaced paper allows her to layer colors and stay where she puts them without disturbing those that are underneath.
In addition to her attraction to light and shadow, she also loves vivid color. "It can create such drama seen in the reds used in Intense Conversation," she adds. "Although color gets all the glory, value is king -- it works to keep the eye moving."
"Intense Conversation" pictured above was from a scene she spotted while patronizing a dimly lit bar in Chicago where she took a candid photo knowing it would have possibilities for an intriguing piece.
Darlene has worked as an illustrator and has been creating portraits in pastel and pencil for over 25 years with repeat clients. She says, "I am inspired by many subjects, but the ones that fascinate and excite me the most are people -- especially those caught in the midst of life, unaware of being observed."
Her award-winning artwork has been juried into multiple national and international fine art competitions as well as solo or group exhibitions throughout the Midwest. Her finished work price ranges are $300-$900. She accepts commissions.
Darlene hopes her art provokes thought and generates conversation.
