Fox Valley native, Jeffrey Equality Brooks, makes his Illinois debut with his highly detailed figurative artwork at Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water Street, in Batavia, IL with his exhibit be honest. Brooks will be joined by Chicago artist Harry Sudman who also creates portraitures that dovetail perfectly with those of Brooks.
The exhibit’s opening reception will be on Friday, November 12th from 6-9pm, and will run until December 4th.
Brooks’ work touches on pop art's color and rendering styles but he’s more interested in the "new sincerity" moniker which rejects brand as identity. He has no interest in post-modernism and its cynicism and says, “My artwork is about you, it's about us, it's about our friends, it's about honesty.” His highly technical paintings want to have an uncomfortable conversation with you.”
Process-wise, Brooks’ one-of-a-kind paintings rely on intricate one-time use stencils and layers of sprayed automotive paint expanded with metal flake, 24k gold, copper, and silver leaf, resin, broken glass, silica, transparent vinyl, flocking and/or enamel.
His integral first step is taking photos of real people in his studio. And yes, uncomfortable conversations are sometimes had during those sessions. The photos are then used as source to build the paintings; however, there’s no print of the photo within the artwork itself.
While Brooks has a Master in Fine Arts from University of Illinois in Chicago, the elaborate techniques he uses in his paintings are his sole invention. It’s a unique style that he’s built up over the last few years. While graphically arresting, Brooks’ paintings have been said to be sensual, luxurious and introspective.
