Congratulations to Jeffrey Equality Brooks who produced this outstanding piece for exhibit in Japan! Jeffrey, who is an affable, easily approachable career artist, enjoys discussing his work and the unique methods he has developed to create one-of-a-kind artwork not seen anywhere else.
He describes his work as contemporary, figurative, with a portraiture feel paired with meaningful text.
"Those who haven’t seen my paintings might be bewildered to hear that they are mostly built up from spraying automotive paints with mega-detailed, cut one-time-use stencils. And in this work, I've also used paint mixed with silica, 24kt gold and copper leaf, broken glass, cut and layered strips of transparent vinyl, brushed enamel, stacks of resin, and of course, my obvious love affair with hot rod paints with oodles of metal flakes and candied paints." With a self-deprecating laugh he admits he's definitely a "materials junkie!"

Jeffrey holds an MFA from UIC (University of Illinois Chicago) with a focus area of photo, film and electronic media. The work he currently produces is meticulously executed and completely unique to his own studio. Prior to receiving his MFA, he was an animator.
Each week, he posts short videos on Instagram and Facebook titled "Saturday Night Live Art" focusing on his work which eventually led to his acceptance into the juried exhibit at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art.

ARTIST STATEMENT FOR WORK BELOW...
"This is the start of a halo series I’m currently working on. These are 40x40x1.5 inches on stretched canvas. This series is built off a pearled and aluminum paint base that was hit with a metal flake. Subsequent layers (oh, which there are a ton of) are transparent or “candies” (as folks say in the auto paint world ) to let the viewer peer into the paint to see the sparkle below. Halos are 24k gold and copper, then the pieces are finished off with an automotive clear coat, which I think looks awesome, but it’s pretty hard to photograph..."
