Laura Smetana is an award-winning children’s book author and illustrator, known for her vibrant, cut-paper watercolor collages that celebrate nature’s beauty and joy.

The “Stories in Collage” exhibit at the Woodridge Public Library (February 2–28, 2025) is Laura’s first solo exhibit and features original collages from My Love for You Is Like a Garden, and upcoming books, My Love for You Is Like the Night Sky and My Lucky Leaf, as well as works inspired by her travels.
The exhibit will also highlight the personal stories behind many of the collages, and is free and open to the public during library hours. An artist reception will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the lobby with activities for kids and refreshments.
Laura’s latest book, My Love for You Is Like a Garden, was named a Kirkus Reviews Best Books of 2023 and has received numerous awards. She is also the author of Ice Cream with Grandpa: A Loving Story for Kids About Alzheimer’s & Dementia (illustrated by Elisabete B. P. de Moraes), which won a Northern Lights Book Award, and Little Squiggle’s Lake Adventure, co-authored with her son.
When she isn’t writing or painting, Laura can be found inspiring kids to create their own books at school author visits, teaching collage art, and spending time with her family. Laura regularly exhibits her collage art at local museums and libraries and is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, the Downers Grove Artists’ Guild, and The Morton Arboretum’s Nature Artists’ Guild.
